What began as a simple end-of-year escape from the fast-paced life of Cape Town turned into an unexpected chapter that would reshape our lives. Drawn to the serene charm of a picturesque village nestled in the Overberg region, we initially planned a brief stay at my father’s home. However, the peaceful surroundings and slower pace captivated us, transforming what was meant to be a temporary retreat into a permanent move to this hidden gem. During our early days here, we often enjoyed the fresh sourdough bread my father kept on hand. It was an instant love affair with this rustic, flavourful bread. As an enthusiastic home cook with a penchant for experimentation, I felt inspired to explore the art of sourdough baking—despite the possible implications for my mid-forties waistline. This was the beginning of a passion that would soon take on a life of its own.
The name "Bumpkin" came naturally, inspired by my fond nickname for the village in which we live: "Country Bumpkin Land." Nestled in what feels like the middle of nowhere, this tight-knit community values simplicity and connection. What began as a personal quest to provide my family with a healthier bread alternative quickly grew into something more. Before long, Bumpkin was baking numerous loaves each week, delighting local residents who return time and again for the distinctive, tangy flavour they have come to love.
